A crippled star, a crack, and three orbitals spinning in reflex (and as reflections of one another).
The agenda here is addressing an alternative to politics of belonging. A certain mode of existence, a reactionary self-constitution based on encounters with all living and non-living things and conditions and constellations including oneself. An ever-changing position, but a very consistent and clear position in being so.
A reflexive positioning which is in essence diplomatic, instead of being bound by a disciplinary belief system, be it ideological or religious.
The obvious paradox to be noticed perhaps, while we position ourselves against what builds up societies, via mechanisms such as flags, nations, teams, communities; we ourselves also employ a visuality or an iconography that is similar (to flags). But in fact, this is no contradiction. It is diplomacy in reflex. What we employ as representation, can change, if need be, as it is not a fundamental or constitutive production of identity. It is a tool, to make ourselves recognizable.
We wish to see ourselves as promoting a certain way of performing the worlds one is given, to react and thus make a change. We act reflexive and diplomatically and believe that criticism and reaction are not as passive acts as we’ve been told.
We don’t believe in any hierarchy, or power structures, we don’t believe in oppression of any sort, we do not tolerate borders and boundaries that are enforced upon us.
The only proposal we have by far is to criticize these, very simply and directly, state what we don’t want, what we are against. We believe such statements to be performative on their own. We are diplomatic, we also at times operate much more subtly, refined, and ambiguous, we are not revolutionary. We believe in a lot of things as stated above, but we do not promote belief systems. Rights and wrongs are bound to change, we wish to free ourselves from such disciplinary formations.
We also know that what we do may have consequences unprecedented. We are also open to acknowledge our own shortcomings, self-transparency is crucial, we will problematize whatever we do. This won’t stop us doing things, but may stop and change the way we do things. We produce statements as objects and objects as statements, we also produce essays/spaces as constellations of statements/objects. Whatever we produce, we hope will become beyond us. That is how they become performative. They are to perform on the social, political, environmental in their broadest sense. Art, for the time being, seems to be suitable and tolerant terrain to enact and perform Diplomacy in Reflex. We are aware this can change, we hope it will not.
Even though it’s our name, and we say “we” and “us” all the time, we are willing to see others act their own diplomacy in reflex, it is for everyone to do.
